Mercy Volunteer Corps, a work serving the poor at 11 sites from Baltimore, Maryland to Georgetown, Guyana, will have five members serving in programs in the Bay Area for a year. The group was welcomed by the Mercy Community in Burlingame Aug. 13. Mercy Volunteer Corps, now in its 40th year, missioned 43 new volunteers this year.

Nicole Fusco, will minister at Faithful Fools in San Francisco’s Tenderloin. Miranda Melone will serve in the Brown Bag and Activity Program at Mercy Retirement and Care Center in Oakland. Emily Janda will lend a hand at The Healing Well in the Tenderloin. Sandra Ruiz and Myranda Empric will serve at St. Peter School in San Francisco.

A team of Mercy sisters, associates and a former corps member supports the volunteers throughout the year with spiritual and social events: Sister Judy Carle, Sister Joan Marie O’Donnell, corps alumnus Katie McGeehan, Sister Sheila Devereux, Sister Marian Rose Power, Sister Eileen Pazmino and associate Kelsey Connolly.

“All the Mercy volunteers are anxious to begin a new chapter in their journey,” said Sister Joan Marie. “They look forward to exploring what it means to live a simple life in community, and to deepen their own faith and spirituality through the experience of serving others.”
