Families exit St. Boniface Church after the dispensation of ashes following the 12:15 Ash Wednesday Mass March 1. Homeless people, the disabled and their caretakers, nearby office workers and immigrant families filled the pews of the multiethnic parish in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. Franciscan Father Franklin Fong, who is St. Boniface’s pastor and also a calligrapher and watercolor artist, gifted each Massgoer with a hand-painted card that included the Franciscan Tau cross and a line of Scripture for Lent.
