Sister Evangela Balde, OP

Dominican Sister Evangela Balde died March 21. Born July 4, 1924, in San Francisco, baptized at Mission Dolores Basilica and attending St. James School and Immaculate Conception Academy, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose Aug. 30, 1942.
On August 30, 1944 Sister Evangela professed first vows and in 1947 began 43 years of ministry in Catholic education as an elementary school teacher and principal. “Sister was a creative teacher, mentor and administrator,” the sisters’ said in a statement. “Her wonderfully upbeat personality, the twinkle in her eye and the mischief in her smile endeared her to her students and colleagues alike.”
In 1990 Sister Evangela was called to the motherhouse to serve as secretary general and congregational archivist. She served in the latter capacity until 2012 when she began mentoring her successor and then served as assistant archivist until her death.
A funeral Mass was celebrated April 3 in the Dominican Sisters’ Chapel at the Fremont motherhouse. Remembrances may be made to the Dominican Sisters’ foundation supporting for inner city schools, Vision of Hope, 1555 34th Ave., Oakland 94601.
