Religious of the Sacred Heart Sister Catherine McMahon died July 31 at Oakwood, the congregation’s retirement facility in Atherton. A funeral Mass was celebrated there with interment in the sisters’ cemetery Aug. 8.
Sister Catherine held assignments at Lone Mountain College, now part of the University of San Francisco and Convent of the Sacred Heart, San Francisco and taught English at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Menlo Park, for more than a decade.
She served as professor and chairperson of the English Department at Sacred Heart College for Women in Chun Cheon, Korea as well as director of the Oxford program in England for the University of San Diego. She also taught English in Poland. Sister Catherine moved to Oakwood in 2008.
“Sister McMahon was a lifelong learner, taking courses in everything from introduction to computers, to Spanish, ancient Greek, and genetics,” the Sacred Heart Sisters said in a statement. “She had a particular call to help families struggling with the terminal illness of a child.”
