Re “The tragic teaching of the narrow gate,” Scripture reflection, Father William Nicholas, Aug. 22:
I am an 81-year-old widow who went through 12 years of Catholic school and suffer crippling scrupulosity in my youth due to fear tactics taught by the Baltimore Catechism and the poor, well-meaning nuns. I was helped by two very kind priests.
I am now and have for some time been very devoted to the Divine Mercy of Jesus and believe in his promises of hope and love and mercy. Father Nicholas’ article on the narrow gate is so disturbing to me. I feel it diminishes hope and salvation and reduces the view of Jesus as our loving and merciful savior.
I have no idea what Father Nicholas’ message is but I find it a message of doom.
