As a Roman Catholic, I am called to practice forgiveness. This is a central tenet of my faith.
But I find it hard to forgive the Roman Catholic bishops of the United States who released a statement on June 16 regarding the Supreme Court’s decision confirming that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects lesbian, gay and transgender people from discrimination.
Archbishop Gomez, the president of the U.S. conference of bishops, characterized the Supreme Court’s decision as “an injustice that will have implications in many areas of life.”
This is an utterly perverse and mean-spirited statement. The Supreme Court’s decision should be heralded as a beacon of justice. It will help protect the rights LGBT people, who historically have been subject to outrageous maltreatment in all areas of life, including employment, housing and benefits.
I have to pray for the strength to forgive Archbishop Gomez and his fellow bishops for their bigotry against people like myself, a married gay Catholic. Lord help me find the way.
